Nairobi motorists have been advised to brace for major traffic disruptions on Thursday, August 7, 2025, as the city hosts a highly anticipated Africa Championship match between Kenya and Angola at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 6, Nairobi Traffic Commandant Joseph Chirchir confirmed that several roads will be closed to allow for the safe and smooth movement of fans heading to the stadium. The directive, issued through the Traffic Department, outlines affected routes and offers alternative options for road users.

“Aerodrome Road from Madaraka roundabout up to Bunyala roundabout will be closed. Likewise, sections of Lang’ata Road and Mombasa Road will be partially closed,” Chirchir stated.

According to the update, motorists using Lang’ata Road from Madaraka to Lusaka roundabout and Mombasa Road from Lusaka to Bunyala roundabout will only have limited access, with one side of each road closed. Commuters have been urged to plan their movements early and to use designated diversions.

For Mombasa Road users heading to the Central Business District (CBD), the department recommends taking the Likoni-Enterprise Road at General Motors or the Southern Bypass at Olesereni. Lang’ata Road motorists heading to town are advised to use Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road at Mbagathi roundabout.

Chirchir also advised those travelling from the CBD to Thika, Juja, or Ruiru to use Limuru Road or Kiambu Road instead of Thika Superhighway. “We urge all motorists not heading to Kasarani to avoid Thika Road altogether to reduce congestion,” he said.

Public service vehicles ferrying fans to Kasarani are instructed to use Ruaraka Baba-Ndogo Road and Ngomongo Road to access the stadium via Ngomongo roundabout.

Motorists travelling from Thika Road towards Nairobi CBD are advised to opt for the Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road to ease traffic pressure along the main highway.

With tens of thousands expected to attend the Kenya versus Angola clash, authorities say the temporary traffic control measures are crucial for ensuring public safety and orderly logistics. The Traffic Department has called on all road users to cooperate with traffic marshals and adhere to guidance throughout the event.

The Africa Championship tournament has drawn massive crowds to the capital, and Thursday’s match is anticipated to be one of the most attended fixtures of the tournament.
