Police announce road closures in Nairobi ahead of CHAN matches

Key affected routes include Aerodrome Road and the stretch from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout
The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a public notice warning of temporary traffic disruptions in Nairobi on Sunday, August 10, 2025, due to the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) and the expected surge in traffic.
Key affected routes include Aerodrome Road and the stretch from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.
In addition, one lane of Lang’ata Road from Madaraka Roundabout to Lusaka Roundabout and one lane of Mombasa Road from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout will be temporarily shut.
Motorists have been advised to seek alternative routes to avoid delays. Those travelling from Mombasa Road to the CBD are encouraged to use Likoni Road and Enterprise Road near General Motors or opt for the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni.
Drivers from Lang’ata Road towards the CBD should take Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road through Mbagathi Roundabout, while CBD-bound travellers heading to Thika Road can use Limuru Road or Kiambu Road.
Matatus ferrying fans to Kasarani are to use Ruaraka, Baba Ndogo Road, and Ngomongo Road to reach Ngomongo Roundabout. Motorists from Thika Road heading to the CBD should take the Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road, and avoid Thika Road unless travelling to Moi International Sports Centre or Kasarani Stadium.
The NPS states it is coordinating with other agencies to ensure smooth traffic management and has deployed additional officers to enforce the rules. “Stern action will be taken against anyone violating traffic regulations,” the notice warned.
CHAN matches on Sunday will see Kenya's Harambee Stars take on Morocco at Kasarani Stadium at 3 pm, while South African sides Angola and Zambia face off at the Nyayo Stadium at 6 pm.
