A joint security operation has led to the arrest of four law enforcement officers suspected of running an illegal firearms and ammunition trade that has been linked to growing insecurity across the country.
The arrests as announced by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI ), followed weeks of meticulous investigations targeting a network involving officers based in Turkana and Nairobi.
The suspects include Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Ekidor Lotira Charles, Corporal Isaac Kipngetich of Turkana County Police Headquarters, Police Constable Ileli Cyrus Kisamwa, an armorer at the Central Firearms Stores in Industrial Area, and Constable Samson Muriithi Mutongu, a storeman also stationed at the same facility.
They had been under surveillance by the Operations Support Unit over their suspected role in supplying ammunition to criminal groups.
According to the DCI, the breakthrough came when Corporal Kipngetich was caught pants down receiving 1,000 rounds of ammunition from Constables Ileli and Mutongu.
The consignment was intended for ASP Ekidor Lotira.
Detectives later arrested Constable Mutongu, recovering 19 assorted firearm magazines, firing pins, cleaning kits, and three spent 9mm cartridges.
Constable Ileli was also found with a Remington Rand Model 1911 pistol and two Ceska pistol firing pins.
All four suspects have been processed and are set to appear in court on Monday, September 29, 2025.
The National Police Service has condemned the actions of the officers and pledged to take firm measures against anyone undermining public safety through the illegal arms trade.
