Wetang’ula urges ODM leaders to back Raila’s support for President Ruto

Speaker Wetang’ula urged those yet to take a definitive position to boldly back the president’s second-term bid
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has challenged undecided leaders within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to align with Raila Odinga in supporting President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Taking to his X page on Sunday, August 10, 2025, Wetang’ula urged those yet to take a definitive position to boldly back the president’s second-term bid.
“Echoing ODM leader Raila Odinga’s pledge to support President William Ruto beyond 2027, I urge undecided ODM leaders to rally behind his second-term ambitions,” Wetang’ula stated.
The call comes shortly after Raila publicly dismissed opponents of the current government and those chanting ‘Wantam’ slogans as insignificant.
In a recent strong endorsement of his coalition with Ruto, Raila appealed to critics demanding that the president serve only one term to give the broad-based government time to deliver on its mandate and reserve judgment until after the 2027 general elections.
“I urge the detractors of this broad-based government to allow us the space we need and hold their verdict until 2027. We have made it clear that this government will continue until then, after which we will chart the way forward,” Raila said emphatically.
He stressed that the Kenyan people’s sovereign will ultimately decides the length of any leader’s tenure and expressed confidence that the government will transparently present its achievements and future plans to voters when the time comes.
Despite surviving various challenges since the formation of the broad-based government five months ago, ODM remains divided over the alliance with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
A faction led by influential party figures such as Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and Saboti MP Caleb Amisi continues to oppose the new association.
