Five witnesses to testify in assault case against comedian’s attacker

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has lined up five witnesses in the assault case involving comedian Carren Chepchumba, popularly known as Bella Comedy. The incident occurred during the Kutit Cultural Festival at Carnivore Gardens in Nairobi on August 9, 2025.
Bernard Kipkosgei Koyumi, also known as Pavilion Motiryot, is facing charges of robbery with violence and causing actual bodily harm.
He appeared before Principal Magistrate C.M. Njagi at Kibera Law Courts, where he denied the allegations. The matter has been scheduled for hearing on September 23, 2025.
Court documents indicate that the accused allegedly robbed Bella Comedy of Sh30,000 in cash and a Redmi 14 Pro smartphone valued at Sh26,000 during the festival. In addition to the theft, he reportedly assaulted her with kicks and blows, causing injuries to her leg, stomach, and chest.
Bella Comedy was attending the event to network with fellow content creators and produce online content when the incident took place, turning what was meant to be a professional engagement into a traumatic experience.
During the court session, it was revealed that the accused initially posted a Sh500,000 bond for release. However, he later requested an alternative arrangement, claiming he could not raise the full bond amount.
The court subsequently granted a cash bail of Sh500,000, with two contact persons required to ensure compliance with the conditions of release.
The five witnesses lined up by the DPP are expected to provide testimony that will shed light on the events of the day, including the alleged theft and assault.
