KANU Secretary General George Wainaina has spoken publicly for the first time following his arrest in connection with the murder of city lawyer Kyallo Mbobu, firmly denying any involvement in the killing.
Wainaina, who was taken into custody last week alongside two others, was released on Saturday night after police confirmed they had not found evidence linking them to the crime. The three had been questioned extensively before being freed.
In a statement on Sunday, Wainaina said he was detained after investigators reviewed CCTV footage that captured him greeting the late Mbobu at the parking lot of Sagret Hotel shortly before the lawyer was killed.
“On Thursday, I was arrested by police officers following CCTV footage that showed me exchanging a greeting with the late Advocate Kyallo Mbobu at the parking lot of Sagret Hotel, before the tragic incident that claimed his life,” he said.
“On that day, the late Advocate Mbobu was meeting with my neighbour and my interaction with him was only a brief exchange of greetings.”
He explained that as a licensed firearm holder, he had fully cooperated with investigators, surrendering his weapon for ballistic tests and making himself available for questioning.
“I wish to make it abundantly clear that I had no role whatsoever in this heinous act. After due process, the authorities found no evidence linking me to the matter and I was subsequently released,” he stated.
Wainaina described the experience of being arrested as distressing but said it could not compare to the grief faced by Mbobu’s family and colleagues.
“Every Kenyan deserves justice, fairness, and security, for these are the foundations of a free and stable society. It is in this spirit that I trust our institutions to pursue the truth with diligence and deliver justice for the late Advocate Mbobu and his family,” he said.
The KANU official expressed his condolences to Mbobu’s family and thanked the party leadership, members, and others who supported him during his arrest and questioning. He also reaffirmed his commitment to cooperate with investigators whenever needed and pledged to uphold the rule of law.
