The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has opened investigations into bribery allegations against a sitting High Court judge after claims surfaced widely on social media.
In a statement issued on Monday by JSC Secretary Winfridah Mokaya, the commission acknowledged the claims, adding that a full investigation would take place before appropriate action is taken.
“The Judicial Service Commission has noted allegations of bribery against a judge that have been circulating on social media,” the statement read.
“In this regard, the Commission has commenced investigations into the matter and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to uphold integrity and ensure accountability within the Judiciary, in full adherence to the rule of law.”
The commission said the probe is in line with Articles 172 and 168 of the Constitution, which mandate it to promote and safeguard the independence and accountability of the Judiciary.
The controversy first emerged when a city lawyer released a formal demand letter to the judge seeking the immediate return of Sh10,000,000, allegedly paid to him as bribe.
According to the lawyer, the funds were paid in two installments through a contact person under a clear understanding that specific services would be rendered.
However, the lawyer claims the judge failed to fulfill his part of the agreement, prompting the lawyer to demand full repayment within seven days of the letter’s release.
The lawyer also indicated that he had secured a bank loan to make the payments, highlighting the financial strain the matter has caused him.
