Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has praised Kenyan police officers serving in Haiti, describing them as a source of national pride and global respect.

Speaking on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi during the Jukwaa la Usalama forum, Murkomen said the officers had brought honour to the country and would strengthen domestic security with the experience gained abroad.

He noted that Kenya remains the only country to have successfully deployed police officers to the troubled Caribbean nation and managed to restore order.

“I want to thank our police officers for the sacrifice they make and the job they do. Our police service is respected globally. We are the only country that has ever sent police to Haiti and managed to subdue gangs to the point of pacifying the city,” Murkomen said.

The CS welcomed the United Nations’ recent decision to expand the mission in Haiti, saying the move would allow other countries to deploy personnel while giving Kenyan officers an opportunity to return home.

“This gives space for other people to go so that our police officers can come back home. The experience they have received will be invaluable in helping us deal with gangs in Nairobi and other parts of the country,” he added.

Murkomen emphasised that the professionalism of Kenyan officers abroad had boosted the country’s international reputation. He thanked the Inspector General of Police for providing leadership that, he said, had enabled the Service to shine on the global stage.

At the same time, the CS acknowledged challenges facing the National Police Service, particularly issues of mental health.

He urged more focus on the well-being of officers, noting the heavy sacrifices they make in safeguarding the country.

“Some of our police officers are struggling with mental health issues that must be dealt with. But we must also recognize that many of them work tirelessly to protect us. From the borders in Garissa to the streets of Nairobi, the sacrifices they make are the reason Kenya is safer today,” he said.

Murkomen also praised officers for foiling numerous crimes, including threats targeting critical institutions and the public.

He reaffirmed government commitment to supporting the Service, saying Kenya owes its peace and stability to the dedication of men and women in uniform.
