Police in Tharaka Nithi County arrested one suspect found in possession of 40 litres of an illicit brew known as ‘Unga’re’. The arrest followed a joint operation on Sunday between Rubati Police Post officers and local administrators, as authorities intensify efforts to eradicate harmful brews across the country.
The coordinated raid targeted hotspots suspected to be operating as brewing and distribution points for unlicensed alcoholic beverages in the Karamani location.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), the operation was part of an ongoing national campaign aimed at stamping out the manufacture, sale, and consumption of harmful alcoholic drinks.
“The suspect was found in possession of 40 litres of an illicit brew known locally as ‘Unga’re’. The brew was confiscated and taken to Rubati Police Post as an exhibit,” the police statement read.
The arrested individual was escorted to the police station, where he is currently being held in custody, awaiting arraignment in court. The NPS said the suspect will be charged once investigations are complete.
Authorities have raised concern over the continued production and sale of illicit alcohol across various counties, noting that such substances pose serious health risks to consumers.
Many illicit brews are manufactured using unsafe ingredients and unhygienic methods, often leading to cases of poisoning, blindness, or death.
