Two Kakamega civil registration officers arrested in bribery probe

At the time of their arrest, the two officials had reportedly just received a bribe of Ksh2,500 to hasten the processing of a birth certificate.
Two officials from the Civil Registration Department in Kakamega have been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over bribery allegations.
The suspects—a Civil Registrar based at the Kakamega Huduma Centre and a Civil Registration Officer—are accused of demanding bribes from applicants to fast-track the issuance of civil registration documents.
EACC reports indicate that the bribes were allegedly collected through a privately-run mobile money till number, hinting at a well-coordinated corruption network.
At the time of their arrest, the two officials had reportedly just received a bribe of Ksh2,500 to hasten the processing of a birth certificate.
''The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Tuesday, 15th April 2025, apprehended two officials from the Kakamega Civil Registration Department for allegedly soliciting and receiving bribes from applicants seeking civil registration documents,'' EACC shared in a statement.
''It is further alleged that the bribes paid are funnelled through a privately operated mobile till number, pointing to a coordinated bribery syndicate. At the time of their nabbing, the officials had just received Kes2,500 to facilitate the processing of a birth certificate.''
The duo was held at Bungoma Police Station as they awaited transfer for further processing at the EACC's Western Regional Offices.
The EACC announced that it has stepped up its efforts to combat the misuse of public resources at key service delivery points, emphasizing that bribery undermines justice, restricts citizens' access to essential services, and erodes public confidence in government institutions.
