National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula is set to depart the country on Thursday, April 24, 2025, to attend the funeral of Pope Francis at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2025.

Wetang’ula made the announcement during a visit to the Apostolic Nunciature in Nairobi, where he led a delegation of Members of Parliament in delivering a message of condolence.

He stated that President William Ruto had chosen him to officially represent Kenya at the solemn occasion.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga also attended the event.

In his tribute, Speaker Wetang’ula remembered the late Pope as a committed religious leader who championed peace, unity, and the well-being of humanity.

“In my communication to the House, when we observed a minute of silence, I quoted one of his profound statements: 'The world is like a public hospital that heals wounds but wounds hearts," said Wetang’ula.

"He stood for building bridges between people and communities, not erecting walls. We may not have a perfect world, but we need one where everyone is a brother or sister, regardless of background, religion, or social status."

The former Prime Minister Raila Odinga expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, describing him as a true embodiment of Christian values and a profound loss to all of humanity.

He reflected on the Pope’s global influence, highlighting how he touched countless lives through his ministry.

“He was a gentle soul who constantly prayed for the world. In times of crisis, he was a voice of reason, always standing up for the marginalized and confronting injustice,” Raila noted.
