Members of Parliament will not attend their scheduled session on Thursday as a mark of respect following the death of Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025.

In a statement released on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula announced that the session would be suspended to allow Catholic leaders to convene and sign a condolence book in the late Pope’s honour.

"For those who profess the Catholic faith, we will be going to the residence of the Nuncio to sign the condolence book on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 9:00 am. You can get in touch with my office to tell you the assembly point, then we can all go together," Wetang’ula stated.

During Tuesday’s parliamentary session, several lawmakers paid tribute to the late Pope Francis, describing him as a source of inspiration not only to Catholics but to humanity at large.

Emuhaya MP Omboko Milemba praised the Catholic Church for its significant role in establishing some of Kenya’s earliest and most successful educational institutions, such as Alliance High School.

"On behalf of the people of Emuhaya, I express solidarity with Catholics as they grieve the passing of Pope Francis," he said.

Tigania West MP John Mutunga echoed the sentiments, describing the Pope as a symbol of unity.

"The Pope’s humility was evident to all. During his visit to Kenya, he engaged not just with Catholics, but also embraced leaders from other faiths," Mutunga remarked.

Nairobi County Woman Representative Esther Passaris also paid tribute to the late Pope Francis, remembering him as a shining example of humility, grace, and compassion who inspired Catholics across the globe.

"Pope Francis showed us that faith and conscience are not at odds but, together, are a path to authentic discipleship. He reminded us that the heart of the gospel is mercy, justice and dignity of every person," Passaris noted.

"I found Pope Francis to be a true reflection of Christ’s compassion. May we honour his memory by knowing that love is stronger than judgement, and inclusion is deeper than fear."

However, Passaris cautioned individuals who have been misusing the Pope’s official attire and images of Raila Odinga, stating that such actions amount to mockery of the global Catholic community, which comprises over two billion faithful.

"To our Gen Zs out there, I urge you to show respect, not only for Raila Odinga but also for the Catholic Church and the late Pope, who is yet to be laid to rest. Turning his death into a subject of ridicule is deeply disrespectful and shameful," she stated.
