The High Court is set to deliver its ruling on a case challenging the impeachment of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza on Friday March 14.

Mwangaza's lawyers, Elias Mutuma and Elisha Ongoya, urged Justice Bahati Mwamuye to uphold the will of Meru voters who elected her into office adding that the impeachment motion lacked merit.

The embattled Meru governor warned that without the court’s intervention, she would be forced out of office, paving the way for her deputy’s swift swearing-in.

She further states that this would unfairly portray her as guilty even before the court had fully examined the issues raised in the petition and wants the court to acknowledge that she was elected by the people, hence should be permitted to complete her term in office.

Additionally, she insisted that the Senate hearings violated her right to a fair trial, claiming that the process was conducted in a hostile environment and that the outcome was predetermined.

Meanwhile, the Council of Governors backed Kawira’s petition, arguing that the impeachment process was driven by bad faith.

The expected court ruling comes amid an attempt by the Meru County Assembly to impeach eight County Executive Committee Members (CECM) serving under Governor Mwangaza.

The officials targeted for impeachment are; Ibrahim Mutwiri (Finance), Benjamin Mungania (Youth and Sports), County Secretary Dr. Kiambi Atheru,  Thurania Ithana (Roads),  and Dickson Munene (Legal Affairs).

Others targeted in the censure motion are Jackson Muthamia (Water), Yusuf Kithure (Education), and Harriet Makena (Trade).
