In Summary

According to authorities, the intelligence-led operation targeted known hideouts of illicit brews and drugs, areas that have long posed a threat to public health and safety.

Police in Bungoma County arrested seven suspects and seized 455 litres of illegal alcohol in an intelligence-led raid at Khalala Village, Webuye West. The suspects are in custody awaiting arraignment as authorities vow to sustain the crackdown.

According to authorities, the intelligence-led operation targeted known hideouts of illicit brews and drugs, areas that have long posed a threat to public health and safety.

The swoop resulted in significant recoveries, including 360 litres of Busaa, 40 litres of Kangara, and 55 litres of Chang’aa.

These highly intoxicating and often dangerous concoctions are believed to have been destined for distribution within the local community.

The suspects apprehended during the raid were taken into custody at Matisi Police Station, where they are being processed ahead of their arraignment in court.

Police say the arrests mark a major step in dismantling networks behind the supply of unregulated and unsafe alcohol in the region.

Illicit brews such as Chang’aa and Kangara have been associated with numerous health complications, including poisoning, blindness, and even death.

The substances are often brewed in unhygienic conditions and sold without regulation, making them particularly hazardous to unsuspecting consumers. In Bungoma and other counties, such operations are part of a broader national strategy to protect citizens from harmful second-generation alcohol.

The National Police Service praised the Matisi officers for their vigilance and dedication, noting that their proactive intervention not only disrupted illegal activities but also potentially saved lives.

The crackdown underscores the government’s commitment to eradicating illicit brews that continue to pose a menace to society, particularly in rural areas where such products are widely consumed.

Police further called on members of the public to play an active role in the fight against illicit alcohol.
