Kenya Airways is stepping up its services to Kisumu this weekend to cater to a sharp rise in travel demand linked to national events. The airline announced on October 17, 2025, that it will operate extra flights and deploy larger Boeing 737 aircraft on several routes between Friday, October 17, and Monday, October 20, to ease passenger flow.
The national carrier said the move is intended to ensure smooth and reliable travel for those heading to the lakeside city, which has recorded heavy bookings amid the ongoing events.
“We’ve increased our flight frequency to Kisumu over the weekend to accommodate the high travel demand,” Kenya Airways said in a statement.
The updated schedule includes two extra flights on Friday, October 17 — KQ656 at 1:30 p.m. and KQ658 at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, October 18, passengers can expect an early morning flight, KQ650 at 6:50 a.m., while KQ654 at 8:05 a.m. will operate on a larger Boeing 737 to carry more travelers.
Sunday, October 19, will see flights KQ654 (8:05 a.m.) and KQ671 (7:00 p.m.) upgraded to Boeing 737 aircraft, with the same upgrades extending into Monday for KQ654 and KQ670.
Kenya Airways stressed that the additional flights and aircraft upgrades demonstrate its dedication to providing a seamless travel experience.
“We remain committed to ensuring seamless travel for all our guests,” the airline added.
The expanded capacity is expected to help thousands of mourners traveling to Kisumu to pay their last respects to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Public viewing of the former leader’s body is scheduled for Saturday, October 18, at Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Kisumu, with burial taking place in his rural home in Bondo, Siaya County on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
