University student in Nyamira dies after severe caning by uncles

Police in Nyamira are probing the death of a 22-year-old Chuka University student who allegedly died after being excessively caned by his uncles in Nyankono village, North Mugirango Constituency.

The student, Brian Mogaka, had reportedly been suspended from Chuka University over accusations of cannabis use.

His mother, Teresa Mogaka, is said to have sought help from her brothers to discipline him. The uncles allegedly tied his hands and legs before subjecting him to the brutal caning, leading to his death.

According to reports, on realizing that Mogaka had died, his uncles tried to cover up their crime to make it look like he had committed suicide.

They laid the body on the bed after changing its clothes before planting a bottle of cattle pesticide beside it, said the report.

Police from Ekerenyo station arrived at the home on Tuesday night and transferred the body to Nyamira Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Ikonge Assistant Chief Joseph Masese confirmed that the body had multiple bruises and injuries consistent with caning.
