"It is my mouth, and I have freedoms. So long as Kenyans are suffering, I will continue to speak about their issues," said the Governor

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has alleged that he is being targeted for openly criticizing President William Ruto’s government.

Speaking during an interview on Sulwe FM on Tuesday, Natembeya claimed that certain individuals—whom he did not name—have been trailing him, suggesting that their actions are politically motivated.

He pointed a finger at the President, implying that the harassment stems from his refusal to align himself with those who constantly praise the Head of State.

"If I’ve done something wrong, why not confront me directly?" he posed.

"Being shadowed like this makes it seem as though there’s no freedom in this country. It’s as if not joining those who sing the President’s praises makes you an enemy. I will not go along with that."

"It is my mouth, and I have freedoms. So long as Kenyans are suffering, I will continue to speak about their issues."

Governor Natembeya maintained that he would not be silenced through threats or intimidation, declaring, "We are born once and die once—you can’t go through life constantly afraid."

He went on to say, "I know the President might send people to eliminate me, but I’m not afraid. I will continue to speak my truth. Our intentions are genuine, and if the leadership is truly concerned, they’ll take our concerns seriously."

Natembeya has been a vocal critic of President Ruto’s administration, particularly over matters such as the state of healthcare.

His stance has drawn backlash from some of the President’s allies, who have accused him of fueling ethnic tensions in the Western region.

In recent months, Natembeya’s convoy has come under attack multiple times, highlighting growing security concerns around his political activities.

Since the 2022 general election, the governor has been locked in a power struggle with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, each vying for dominance over the political landscape in Western Kenya.
