After months of criticism targeting President William Ruto's administration and the concept of a broad-based government, Siaya Governor James Orengo is leading a delegation to State House in Nairobi today.

This visit aims to ease tensions in the region and unite local leaders behind the government’s agenda.

Orengo, who has faced pushback from some ODM members due to his firm opposition to Raila Odinga’s alliance with Kenya Kwanza, has also been making efforts to engage directly with President Ruto.

Orengo confirmed that he had formally written to President Ruto following discussions with Raila Odinga, requesting a meeting.

"I sent a letter to the President on behalf of the Siaya elected leaders, seeking an audience. He replied that he would meet us through the office of the Head of Public Service. Under Raila’s leadership, we have agreed to unite and work together as Siaya leaders for the benefit of our people. Our county must progress," Orengo stated.

During his visit to Nyanza last week, President Ruto unveiled several projects in Kisumu and Homa Bay counties but notably did not stop in Siaya.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi called the State House meeting a development visit, saying it will bring together elected officials, professionals, religious leaders, businesspeople, youth, and women from the county.

While Homa Bay and Kisumu continue to benefit from national government projects, Siaya currently lacks significant ongoing development initiatives.

Orengo has been a vocal critic of President Ruto, openly opposing the newly formed alliance between ODM and the ruling UDA party.

At the funeral of ODM leader Raila Odinga’s bodyguard two months ago an event attended by President Ruto Orengo urged ODM supporters to stand firm and defend their rights.

However, his stance has drawn backlash from prominent figures including Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi, Senator Oburu Oginga, and MPs David Ochieng (Ugenya), Elisha Odhiambo (Gem), Sam Atandi (Alego Usonga), and Gideon Ochanda (Bondo).

A group identifying as professionals from Siaya reportedly attempted to push for Orengo’s impeachment, but the effort failed as the county’s MCAs rallied in his support.

Meanwhile, Senator Oburu Oginga has frequently criticized the Governor at public events, challenging Orengo’s persistent focus on activism.
