Rachel Ruto lauds private sector at 2025 energy awards

Ruto noted that various stakeholders in the energy industry are spearheading efforts to develop innovative and sustainable energy technologies.
First Lady Rachel Ruto has praised the private sector for its growing role in advancing clean energy solutions across the country.
Addressing participants at the 21st edition of the Energy Management Awards 2025 held in Nairobi, Ruto noted that various stakeholders in the energy industry are spearheading efforts to develop innovative and sustainable energy technologies.
She emphasized that nations like Kenya, along with other developing countries, remain particularly exposed to the adverse effects of climate change.
"Kenya is blessed with a wealth of renewable energy resources that are essential in meeting our climate mitigation goals," she remarked.
According to the First Lady, Kenya is leading the East African region in adopting clean cooking technologies, with the adoption rate currently at 34.4%.
She further acknowledged that numerous companies are already generating their own clean energy, reducing reliance on non-renewable sources.
Ruto also highlighted the importance of national initiatives such as the Last Mile Connectivity Project, saying such efforts are instrumental in delivering clean and reliable energy to households across the country.
"We must ensure the energy transition in Kenya is equitable and inclusive, reaching every citizen, especially those in marginalized regions," she urged.
She called on manufacturers and other major energy consumers to invest in energy efficiency and prioritize measures that cut greenhouse gas emissions.
"Together, let’s embrace sustainable practices and support clean cooking solutions for a healthier environment," she concluded.
Energy Cabinet Secretary Wandayi also hailed the First Lady for her dedication to championing clean energy and promoting the shift toward sustainable cooking alternatives.
Energy Cabinet Secretary Wandayi commended the First Lady’s consistent advocacy for cleaner energy and sustainable cooking methods.
“Your presence today underscores the depth of your commitment to promoting energy efficiency and advancing clean cooking solutions,” said CS Wandayi.
He noted that the Ministry is focused on expanding electricity access as a catalyst for economic and social transformation, in line with Kenya’s Vision 2030 blueprint.
“We are calling on the private sector to increase investment not only in power generation and transmission but also in expanding electricity access and accelerating adoption of clean cooking technologies,” he said.
Wandayi also endorsed this year’s event theme Beyond Energy Efficiency: Inclusive Solutions for a Sustainable Future describing it as a powerful and forward-looking guide for sector players.
Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira reiterated the government’s dedication to a green energy future, stating that Kenya is on track to achieve 100 percent green power by 2030.
“We must manage our energy resources wisely to ensure we leave behind a cleaner, greener environment for future generations,” said PS Wachira.
He proudly noted that Kenya currently generates 92% of its energy from renewable sources—a significant achievement in the region.
