Kalonzo had been in the UK for a ten-day official visit that began on October 8, following his party’s decision earlier this month to endorse him as their presidential flagbearer ahead of the 2027 elections. His trip included meetings with policy leaders, international partners, and members of the Kenyan community abroad.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has cut short his visit to the United Kingdom and is flying back to Nairobi to attend the burial of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

His office confirmed on Wednesday, October 16, that he had left Heathrow International Airport and is scheduled to arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at 6am on Friday, October 17, 2025.

“The Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) Leader HE Dr Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, EGH, SC, CS, has departed from Heathrow International Airport (HIA), London, United Kingdom, for Nairobi, Kenya,” read a statement from his secretariat.

It further noted that upon landing, Kalonzo will head directly to join Raila’s family, friends, and thousands of mourners gathering to pay their last respects.

Kalonzo had been in the UK for a ten-day official visit that began on October 8, following his party’s decision earlier this month to endorse him as their presidential flagbearer ahead of the 2027 elections. His trip included meetings with policy leaders, international partners, and members of the Kenyan community abroad.

He was also scheduled to hold a consultative meeting with officials from the Commonwealth Secretariat and other stakeholders focusing on governance and investment opportunities. The visit was meant to strengthen his international networks and promote Kenya’s diplomatic and economic interests.

According to Senator Abdalla Shakila, Kalonzo’s engagements were part of Wiper’s wider plan to build global partnerships and connect with Kenyans in the diaspora.

“This visit is part of Wiper’s ongoing strategy to build international partnerships, elevate Kenya’s global presence, and engage Kenyans abroad on critical issues including governance, economic empowerment, and national renewal,” Abdalla said.

His sudden return to the country underlines his close ties with the late Raila Odinga, with whom he shared a long political journey marked by alliance and mutual respect.
