In Summary

Murkomen has come under heavy criticism for remarks he made during a visit to Nairobi's Central Business District, where he instructed police to shoot anyone attempting to storm or loot a police station.

Opposition leaders have issued a strong demand for Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to resign immediately or face impeachment, following his controversial shoot-to-kill remarks made in the wake of deadly protests in Nairobi.

Speaking in Githurai after visiting the family of Boniface Kariuki, a hawker killed during the recent unrest, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa led a scathing attack against Murkomen, saying his directive was unconstitutional and a threat to the lives of innocent citizens.

"Mr Murkomen, the least you can do as the Cabinet Secretary for Interior is to resign immediately. We fully support the impeachment motion being brought against you, and we urge all opposition Members of Parliament to back it without hesitation," Wamalwa declared.

The leaders described the directive as a misuse of office and an endorsement of extrajudicial killings, with Wamalwa saying the country had entered a dangerous phase under Murkomen’s leadership

“We want to ask President Ruto and CS Murkomen, is this the good job you have been talking about? Shooting youths and killing them aimlessly—is this what you are calling a good job?” he asked.

Murkomen has come under heavy criticism for remarks he made during a visit to Nairobi's Central Business District, where he instructed police to shoot anyone attempting to storm or loot a police station. “Anyone approaching a police station, shoot them; a gun is not a toy,” Murkomen said.

Wamalwa’s stance was echoed by a growing number of lawmakers, including some from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), who disclosed plans to file an impeachment motion against the CS. Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, one of the vocal supporters of the move, said Parliament should not tolerate such dangerous rhetoric.

“This Parliament must stand firm. The Interior Cabinet Secretary has overstepped his mandate by issuing unconstitutional directives that endanger lives. We cannot sit back and watch,” said Mukunji.

Although the motion is still in preparation, opposition leaders have vowed to sustain pressure until Murkomen is held accountable. They also raised alarm over increasing cases of police brutality, forced disappearances, and growing insecurity under his watch.

The visit to Kariuki’s family in Githurai came as part of efforts by the opposition to express solidarity with victims of the recent unrest and rally support against what they termed state-sponsored violence.

As outrage spreads, Murkomen’s directive has emerged as a lightning rod for criticism amid a political climate already tense from deadly demonstrations and public discontent.
