Gerrard, Hyypiä & Benítez reunite for Istanbul 2005 anniversary

In a heartfelt special edition of The Reds Roundtable on LFC TV, Liverpool legends Steven Gerrard and Sami Hyypiä reunited with their former manager Rafael Benítez to commemorate the 20th anniversary of one of the greatest nights in football history, Liverpool’s stunning 2005 UEFA Champions League triumph in Istanbul.

Broadcast on May 22, 2025, the reunion took fans on an emotional journey back to that unforgettable evening when the Reds came back from a 3–0 halftime deficit against AC Milan to draw 3–3 and eventually lift the trophy after a dramatic penalty shootout.

Steven Gerrard, who captained Liverpool that night, reflected on the team's never-say-die attitude and the electric support from fans that spurred their comeback.

"It was more than just football that night — it was belief, unity, and the spirit of Liverpool," said Gerrard.

Sami Hyypiä, a defensive stalwart in the squad, praised the team’s composure and focus in the second half. "At halftime, we had a choice — to give up or to fight. We chose to fight," he recalled.

Manager Rafael Benítez shared his memories of the tactical decisions that helped turn the tide in Liverpool’s favor.

"The key was staying calm and making the right changes. The players did the rest — they made history," said Benítez.

The reunion is part of broader celebrations marking two decades since what fans proudly call "The Miracle of Istanbul."

Gerrard is also set to appear at two special live anniversary events — first in Dublin on June 27 at Vicar Street, followed by another in Belfast the next day — where he will interact with fans and relive the historic win.

The program served not only as a nostalgic tribute but also a reminder of the legacy left by that iconic team, whose resilience and heart defined an era of Liverpool Football Club.
