Cherotich and Wanyonyi deliver the goods in Oslo

Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Steeplechase specialist Faith Cherotich were winners in Oslo as they shone in the face of absolute competition.
As expected, Kenya's top-most athletes in the 800 metre men and Women's 3000 metre Steeplechase delivered winning displays during the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Oslo Norway, Thursday night.
Elsewhere, Karsten Warholm gave the packed crowd at the 60th edition of the Bislett Games the performance they craved in the latest Wanda Diamond League meeting as he set a 300m hurdles world best of 32.67, becoming the first athlete to better 33 seconds in this event.
It was the final event of a programme that had seen Mondo Duplantis set two meeting records in the men’s pole vault, Kenya’s Faith Cherotich set a women’s 3000m steeplechase meeting record and world lead of 9:02.60 and Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Isaac Nader and Nico Young earn stirring victories in, respectively, the men’s 800m, mile and 5000m.
In regards to Kenya, 800 metre sensation Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Steeplechase specialist Faith Cherotich were winners in Oslo as they shone in the face of absolute competition.
Wanyonyi, continued his superb 2025 in the 800 metre, winning the men’s race with a season's best time of 1:42.77.
The reigning Olympic champion displayed his trademark composure and speed, battling off a tough field that had Spain’s Mohamed Attaoui and Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati in the statting lineup.
His win in Oslo marks his eighth Diamond League victory, and whilst early in his twenties, making him one of the foremost 800 metre runners of all time.
Wanyonyi, who narrowly missed David Rudisha’s stadium record of 1:42.04, said he was fighting fatigue.
"Today, my body felt a little tired as I have come from Kenya so the travel has been long but I am happy with my performance against a strong field," Wanyonyi said after the race.
In the women’s 3000m steeplechase, 20-year-old, Cherotich produced a world-leading and meeting record time of 9:02.60, breaking a six-year-old record previously held by Norah Jeruto.
Cherotich’s victory came after a dramatic duel with Olympic champion Winfred Yavi of Bahrain, in what has become one of the most compelling rivalries on the track this season.
Cherotich seized control early, maintaining her lead despite Yavi’s late surge, and ultimately secured her second Diamond League win over Yavi this year.
Tunisia’s Marwa Bouzayani finished third in 9:06.84.
Nico Young set a US outdoor 5000m record of 12:45.27 after a monumental race that produced eight other personal bests, including two other national records.
On Sunday, the action shifts to Stockholm, Sweden where we expect to see more Kenyans perform in the Diamond League.
