An Enez Mango own goal was enough to see Kenya's hopes of winning the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations CECAFA women's championships end with a 1-0 defeat to hosts Tanzania at the Azam Complex in Dar Es Salaam.

With both sides having won their opening three clashes in this year's edition, Saturday evening provided the perfect stage for a decider between the two best sides and in the end, the home side edged their visitors in a closely fought match.

Both teams remained undefeated with a 100% record after their first three matches, tied on 9 points.

Tanzania, who had a superior goal difference of +12 to Kenya's +11, needed a draw to lift the trophy, while Kenya needed nothing less than a win to be crowned champions.

On Saturday, Twiga Stars profited from a defensive mix-up between Mango and goalkeeper Lilian Awuor, leading her to inadvertently turn the ball into her own net after a low cross from Clara Luvanga to give the home side the lead, which they did not let go off until the final whistle.

Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi and South Sudan were this year's competitors.

Kenya had beaten Uganda 3-0, South Sudan, and Burundi 4-0 respectively in their group matches to earn the right to face Tanzania for the championship winners' medal.

Head coach Beldine Odemba was proud of her team despite the loss.

"We knew we would find a tough opponent playing at home. Congratulations to Tanzania. We live to fight next time," she stated.

The win for Tanzania means that they land their third overall CECAFA title, having also won back in 2016 and 2018. Kenya won the tournament back in 2019.
