Gor Mahia captain eyes cup glory after league disappointment

Gor finished second in the league behind new champions Kenya Police FC and are set to face Nairobi United in the Mozzart Bet Cup Final this Saturday, June 28.
Gor Mahia captain Philemon Otieno has admitted that missing out on the Kenya Premier League title is a blow to the club, but says the focus now shifts to winning the Mozzart Bet Cup and securing a return to continental football.
Gor finished second in the league behind new champions Kenya Police FC and are set to face Nairobi United in the Mozzart Bet Cup Final this Saturday, June 28.
Otieno said the team is determined to make things right and end the season on a positive note. He acknowledged the disappointment of their supporters, who were hopeful for a double, and issued an apology on behalf of the team.
“From myself and fellow teammates, I want to apologise to our fans because they expected us to win both trophies, especially the league title. Unfortunately, Police have won it. We will go back to the drawing board and redeem ourselves next season,” said Otieno.
The captain praised Kenya Police for their strong second half of the season and said they were worthy champions. However, he believes Gor Mahia will return stronger in the next campaign as they seek to reclaim the league title.
Despite the league setback, Otieno is confident Gor can still deliver silverware this season and qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup through the Mozzart Bet Cup.
“We are in the Mozzart Bet Cup final, and we want to redeem ourselves with a win, especially for our fans. It is important to end the season on a high note,” he added.
Gor Mahia are targeting a return to the continental stage. The club last won a continental title in 1988, lifting the CAF Confederation Cup, and will be hoping a win on Saturday opens the door for another shot at glory.
