Following a delay brought about by off field matters, week one of the FKF Women's Premier League took off this past weekend at various venues around the country.
Record FKF Women’s Premier League champions Vihiga Queens launched their title campaign in convincing fashion, securing a 3-0 away victory over Bungoma Queens on Sunday afternoon at the Bungoma National Polytechnic.
Vihiga’s Head Coach, Boniface Nyamu Nyamu, named a strong starting lineup that included new signings: Anita Namata, Noel Shilachilo, Airin Madalina, and Damali Matama and it was debutant Madalina who broke the deadlock in the 30th minute, marking her return to the FKF Women’s Premier League with a goal.
Elsewhere, Madira Soccer Assassins marked their return to the top flight with a 2-0 victory over debutants Gideon Starlets at Mumboha Stadium in Vihiga County.
Fresh from scoring for Kenya in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers against Ethiopia, lethal forward Valerie Nekesa netted a brace to secure all three points for the Soccer Assassins.
Assassins made history in 2023 when they became the first girls’ school to feature in Kenya’s Women top-flight league; they were promoted at the start of the 2023/24 season but were relegated in the same season. They spent a year in the cold before winning the FKF Women’s National Super League Zone B and earning promotion back to the top flight.
