Qatari-based striker and talisman Michael Olunga has been named in the provisional Harambee Stars squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers.
New Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy understandably named the experienced Olunga alongside other notable faces in a 48-man lineup that will join camp ahead of twin clashes against Gambia and Gabon.
The Stars face off with Gambia in Abidjan Ivory Coast 20 March with the clash against Gabon taking place in Nairobi 4 days later.
Goalkeepers Ian Otieno, Farouk Shikhalo, and Brian Bwire were amongst a 4 man shortlist in the handglove circles.
In defence, the experienced Brian Mandela who has played in South Africa where McCarthy has coached previously, was called up as is the overlapping Eric 'Marcelo' Ouma, both with plenty of experience to offer.
Anthony 'Teddy' Akumu, also previously South African as well as the likes of Richard Odada and Eric Johanna offer an experienced look in an otherwise young roster in midfield.
Olunga's experience will be key upfront as McCarthy chases a winning start to life in the Kenyan dugout. Masuud Juma, Elvis Rupia and John Avire add to the firepower upfront, all of them having consistently banged in goals at Kenyan Premier League level.
Local-based players will be expected in camp on Wednesday 12 March to begin preparations.
