Samsung introduces slimmest smartphone yet in bid to outpace Apple

The device also boasts an advanced 6.7-inch screen and cutting-edge artificial intelligence capabilities.
Samsung Electronics launched its thinnest flagship model on Tuesday, the S25 Edge, marking a significant step in the company's bid to lead the premium smartphone market.
With the increasing demand for more portable devices, especially from consumers in their 20s and 30s, the new S25 Edge features an ultra-slim body, measuring just 5.8 millimeters in thickness.
The device also boasts an advanced 6.7-inch screen and cutting-edge artificial intelligence capabilities, making it a strong contender in the race against Apple’s upcoming releases.
"Feedback was clear – users wanted something slimmer and easier to carry without sacrificing performance," said Samsung, highlighting the structural changes made to reduce the thickness of internal components, such as the printed circuit board and thermal systems.
Analysts note that the launch, ahead of Apple’s expected thinner iPhone, appears to be a strategic move to capture consumer interest in the thinner smartphone segment.
"By releasing the product a few months ahead, Samsung could inflict some impact on Apple and attract consumers looking for thinner smartphones," said Ryu Young-ho, a senior analyst at NH Investment & Securities.
The S25 Edge will be available in South Korea on May 23 and in the U.S. on May 30. It will roll out to about 30 countries, including China and various European markets.
With a starting price of $1,099 ( Sh141,576), the new model combines portability with powerful features, such as multimodal AI, which enables users to interact with the device through voice and vision, including real-time camera interactions.
Samsung’s decision to release the device ahead of Apple’s rival offering comes as the company seeks to solidify its position in the premium market.
Samsung recently overtook Apple as the leading global smartphone vendor, capturing a 20% share in the first quarter of 2025.
