Kenya is set to receive a major boost in artificial intelligence education and innovation, following Google’s announcement of Sh904 million ($7 million) in funding to support AI learning and research across four African countries.

The funding is part of a larger Sh4.8 billion ($37 million) initiative by Google aimed at building a stronger AI ecosystem in Africa. Alongside Kenya, the support targets Nigeria, South Africa, and Ghana, and will be directed to academic institutions and nonprofit organisations working on developing localised AI curricula, online safety training, and cybersecurity education.

With Nairobi already gaining recognition as a tech innovation hub, the investment is expected to accelerate Kenya’s position in AI research and skills development.

It will also open new opportunities for students and innovators to access critical skills in areas such as data science, AI development, and digital security.

Beyond education, Google is extending its AI support through several initiatives across the continent.

These include a Sh3.2 billion ($25 million) grant for food security solutions, Sh388 million ($3 million) funding for the Masakhane Research Foundation, which focuses on developing AI for over 40 African languages, and the launch of the first AI Community Centre in Accra, Ghana.

The centre will serve as a collaborative space for AI learning, creativity, and experimentation. It is expected to host workshops, training, and community events focused on ethical and responsible AI development.

Google said its programming in Africa will revolve around four main themes: AI literacy, community technology, social impact, and arts and culture.

The goal is to create a platform where students, developers, and creators can engage with AI in ways that align with the continent’s needs and priorities.

James Manyika, Google’s Senior Vice President for Research, Labs, and Technology & Society, said: “Africa is home to some of the most important and inspiring work in AI today.

We are committed to supporting the next wave of innovation through long-term investment, local partnerships, and platforms that help researchers and entrepreneurs build solutions that matter.”

Yossi Matias, Vice President of Engineering and Research at Google, added: “This new wave of support reflects our belief in the talent, creativity, and ingenuity across the continent.

By building with local communities and institutions, we’re supporting solutions that are rooted in Africa’s realities and built for global impact.”
