Kenya Forest Service clarifies Ngong Forest project

KFS explained that the project was approved following a thorough Environmental Impact Assessment, and it aligns with the Ngong Road Forest Management Plan.
The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has dismissed reports that a luxury hotel is being constructed inside the Ngong Forest, clarifying that the development in question is a tented camp built on semi-permanent structures.
In a statement, KFS explained that the project was approved following a thorough Environmental Impact Assessment, and it aligns with the Ngong Road Forest Management Plan.
The Service emphasized that the process included public participation in collaboration with the Community Forest Association and received endorsement from relevant stakeholders.
"KFS wishes to clarify that this camp, comprising tents on semi-permanent infrastructures, is an approved development under the Ngong Road Forest Management Plan," read the statement.
KFS added that the Sanctuary block of the Ngong Road Forest is currently undergoing upgrades, including the installation of an electric fence to improve security.
The enhancements are also expected to support natural regeneration and provide regulated access to the area.
"The ongoing development of Ngong Road Forest aims to establish a premier green space for Nairobi residents, thereby alleviating the substantial visitor pressure on Karura Forest, which currently receives over 80,000 visitors monthly," KFS noted.
The development is a joint effort involving KFS, forest-adjacent communities, and other partners, including I&M Foundation, which has contributed Sh200 million towards the Sanctuary block.
The clarification follows concerns raised by the Greenbelt Movement, a conservation group, which claimed in a widely circulated letter that a luxury hotel was being constructed in the forest.
KFS responded strongly to the allegation, saying it risks misleading the public and stirring unnecessary outrage.
"Therefore, KFS notes with concern that the Greenbelt Movement, a long-standing partner, is disseminating what appears to be misleading information. This information, contained in a letter ostensibly addressed to the Service, risks inciting public discontent regarding the status of Ngong Road Forest," said the Service.
KFS urged the public to seek factual information on forest matters, and reaffirmed its commitment to the development of green spaces and tree planting for the benefit of all.
