Gov’t to launch AI training for public servants by July 2025

Principal Secretaries Dr. Jane Imbunya (Public Service and Human Capital) and Eng. John Kipchumba Tanui (ICT & Digital Economy) recently met with Prof. Nura Mohamed, Director General of the Kenya School of Government (KSG), and other KSG officials to finalize preparations for the AI training programs.

These programs will target all professional levels within the public service, including departments such as Procurement, Administrative Services, Human Resource Management, Corporate Communications, and Finance.

Customized AI training modules will be designed to address the specific needs of different public service roles.

Dr. Imbunya emphasized her commitment, along with the State Department, to ensuring the programs are successfully launched and implemented.

A clear roadmap will be developed to monitor progress, ensure follow-up, and maintain the sustainability of the training outcomes.

To secure leadership support and encourage adoption, a special AI training module will be introduced for Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries, raising awareness of AI’s importance and fostering top-level endorsement.

Participants will be nominated by their respective Ministries, State Departments, and Agencies, with a particular focus on engaging young professionals.

The training will be conducted through the Kenya School of Government’s (KSG) eLearning Information and Technology Institute and the Regional Centre of Competence for Digital and AI Skilling in the Public Sector.

KSG will maintain close collaboration with the State Departments of Public Service and ICT, as well as other public and private sector partners, to ensure smooth implementation of the programs.

This effort supports Kenya’s broader ambition to become a regional hub for digital and AI innovation, as outlined in the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.

The recent launch of the Africa Centre of Competence for Digital and AI Skilling at KSG further demonstrates the government’s dedication to equipping public servants with the vital skills needed for a digitally driven future.
