Kenya denies Involvement in Sudan conflict, says role purely mediatory

Addressing the media on Monday, Dr. Mwaura emphasized that Kenya's involvement is strictly diplomatic, focusing on mediating between the rival groups in Sudan in an effort to broker a ceasefire.
Government Spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura has firmly denied claims suggesting Kenya is playing a direct role in fueling the conflict in Sudan.
Addressing the media on Monday, Dr. Mwaura emphasized that Kenya's involvement is strictly diplomatic, focusing on mediating between the rival groups in Sudan in an effort to broker a ceasefire.
He explained that Kenya’s peace efforts are being guided by the framework of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), with President William Ruto taking a lead role as chair of the peace initiative aimed at reconciling the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
“Kenya played a key role in the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement and has continued to support Sudan’s democratic transition since 2019 through mediation efforts under the African Union and IGAD,” Mwaura noted.
Government Spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura has reiterated that President William Ruto remains at the forefront of diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in Sudan.
He highlighted Ruto’s leadership role within the IGAD peace initiative, including chairing the IGAD Quartet and engaging directly with Sudanese generals Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti) in a bid to foster dialogue and a lasting ceasefire.
Mwaura stressed that Kenya’s stance is firmly rooted in promoting peace, with an exclusive focus on mediation. He noted that the Kenyan government has pledged USD 2 million (approximately Sh258.4 million) in humanitarian aid to assist those affected by the conflict.
He further emphasized that Kenya continues to call for collective regional and global support under the auspices of the African Union (AU), IGAD, and the United Nations to push forward the peace process in Sudan.
“Kenya is unwavering in its commitment to diplomatic and humanitarian intervention. We continue to offer diplomatic backing, technical support, refuge for displaced persons, and a neutral platform for peace talks building on our long-standing record in regional peacebuilding,” Mwaura said.
He concluded by affirming that Kenya’s position in the Sudan crisis remains unchanged and cautioned against the spread of false or misleading information, adding that any future policy shifts will be officially communicated.
