Government unveils Sh60 million aid package for Tana River flood victims

Special Programmes Principal Secretary Ismail Maalim, alongside ASALS PS Kello Harsama, led the distribution of essential supplies including food, blankets, and mattresses during a county-wide tour on Monday.
The national government has rolled out a Sh60 million relief initiative aimed at supporting Tana River residents affected by ongoing flooding.
Special Programmes Principal Secretary Ismail Maalim, alongside ASALS PS Kello Harsama, led the distribution of essential supplies including food, blankets, and mattresses during a county-wide tour on Monday.
Joined by Garsen MP Ali Wario, Galole MP Said Buya, and Bura MP Yakub Adow, the officials kicked off the relief efforts at Bandi IDP Camp in Garsen, where displaced families have sought refuge.
Speaking later in Majengo, PS Maalim underscored the government's commitment to food assistance, noting that more than two million Kenyans currently rely on such support.
Maalim emphasized that providing food to vulnerable citizens is not just a policy decision but a constitutional duty.
His counterpart, PS Harsama, highlighted additional interventions, including the distribution of iron sheets to flood victims, with 600 sheets already supplied to households in Galole constituency.
In addition to delivering aid, the leaders encouraged residents to tap into ongoing government programmes such as the Social Health Authority (SHA) for accessible healthcare, and the NYOTA initiative, which equips youth with economic and vocational training opportunities.
