Maurene Comey, who had served at the Manhattan-based Southern District of New York since 2015, was reportedly told she was being let go with no reason provided.

A senior federal prosecutor involved in high-profile cases against Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell and Sean “Diddy” Combs has been dismissed by the US Department of Justice without explanation, deepening concerns over a wave of removals targeting lawyers tied to politically sensitive prosecutions.

Maurene Comey, who had served at the Manhattan-based Southern District of New York since 2015, was reportedly told she was being let go with no reason provided.

Her dismissal comes despite her long-standing role in one of the most prominent justice offices in the country and close involvement in complex cases that drew both legal and political attention.

Comey is the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, who was fired by President Donald Trump in 2017. Her removal follows a string of sackings targeting officials who had worked on investigations that have angered the Trump administration since he returned to office in January.

While the Justice Department has not issued an official statement, sources confirmed the development to CBS, while Politico reported that Comey was given no explanation for her dismissal.

Her firing comes just weeks after her prosecution team failed to secure convictions on the most serious charges against rapper Sean Combs, who was found guilty only on lesser charges following a highly publicized trial involving allegations of racketeering and sex trafficking.

Comey had also worked on the case against Jeffrey Epstein, the wealthy and well-connected sex offender who died in 2019 in a New York jail while awaiting trial. She was also part of the prosecution team against Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s accomplice, who was later convicted.

Meanwhile, the Justice Department has come under growing scrutiny over its handling of documents related to Epstein’s client list. Attorney General Pam Bondi initially said in February that the department would release the list, only to announce last week that there was no “incriminating list” and that no further files would be made public.

Amid rising pressure from some of his own supporters, Trump on Wednesday lashed out online at those accusing his administration of hiding information about Epstein’s case, calling them “weaklings” and declaring he no longer wanted their support.

Comey’s removal also follows reports that Trump had expressed discomfort about having someone with the Comey name serving in his administration. ABC News reported that the president had privately complained about Maurene Comey’s role.

Her father, James Comey, has also drawn fresh attention after recently being interviewed by the US Secret Service over an Instagram photo of a seashell, which officials claimed might be a veiled threat against Trump.

He later deleted the post. Earlier this month, reports emerged that the Justice Department had opened an inquiry into James Comey’s past testimony to Congress regarding the 2016 Russian election interference probe.

The department, now under Bondi, has been accused of systematically purging staff who worked on investigations into Trump and his allies.

Just last week, at least 20 officials involved in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s twin probes, into the efforts to overturn the 2020 election and Trump’s handling of classified documents, were reportedly dismissed.

Prosecutors who led cases against rioters involved in the January 6 Capitol attack have also been fired.
