The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has admitted that crowd trouble during national matches is taking a toll on the country, both financially and in its reputation, following a hefty Sh6.45 million fine from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The penalty was imposed after security failures during the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier between Kenya and Morocco last Sunday at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

In a statement issued after the ruling, FKF appealed to fans to exercise responsibility, especially during the upcoming CHAN fixture against Zambia.

The federation confirmed that it is now under pressure from CAF and risks facing even tougher measures if security breaches continue.

“Let’s support @Harambee__Stars responsibly on Sunday against Zambia & in all upcoming games. Crowd trouble is costing us dearly, and we are facing heavy sanctions. Only show up at Kasarani if you have a genuine ticket. Tusiharibu game tumestruggle sana kuijenga,” FKF said.

The CAF Disciplinary Board found Kenya guilty of breaking several safety and security rules during the Kenya-Morocco clash. “The Disciplinary Board found Kenya guilty and imposed a fine of USD 50,000.

Kenya was warned that continued failure to meet CAF safety and security requirements may lead to the relocation of Kenya’s National Team matches to an alternative venue,” CAF said.

CAF further warned that if the same issues are seen again, Kenya may lose its right to host home matches for the national team.

The board advised FKF to take urgent action, including placing enough trained security officers both inside and around the stadium, and enforcing proper road closures during match days to control crowds and ensure order.

Apart from Kenya, Morocco’s football federation was also punished following the same match.

CAF fined the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) over the inappropriate conduct of its players.

“The Disciplinary Board found Morocco guilty and imposed a fine of USD 5,000 (Sh650,000), of which USD 2,500 (Sh325,000) is suspended on condition that no similar offence is committed during the remainder of CHAN 2024,” CAF said.

Both fines must be paid within 60 days of the notification. FKF is now hoping that fans will cooperate and help avoid further sanctions that could affect not only the team’s ability to host matches but also the image and future of Kenyan football.
