Deputy Government Spokesperson Gabriel Muthuma has said Harambee Stars’ recent triumph is a reflection of deliberate investment and leadership in sports under President William Ruto.

Speaking during a live interview on Radio Generation’s People’s Breakfast Show, Muthuma noted that while motivation and incentives for players are important, the team’s victory was not a product of chance or promises but of preparation, commitment, and deliberate government support.

He explained that the incentives given to Harambee Stars players were part of an ongoing plan by the government to recognize and reward excellence in sports. President Ruto, he added, only revised the package upwards to underline his commitment to ensuring talent in Kenya is valued and supported.

Muthuma contrasted the current government’s approach with the failed 2016 bid to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN), which he attributed to a lack of seriousness and interest at the time.

He said that under President Ruto, there has been renewed commitment, which has been instrumental in securing wins and putting Kenya back on the continental sports map.

“The difference this time is leadership,” Muthuma said. “Back in 2016, we lost the CHAN bid because we didn’t take it seriously. But under President Ruto, there was interest, deliberate focus, and clear effort. That is why we succeeded.”

He further emphasized that the government’s broader message to young people is that talent pays when it is nurtured, and that sports will continue to receive support as part of Kenya’s development agenda.

According to Muthuma, Harambee Stars’ win should serve as an inspiration for other sectors, proving that intentional action, focus, and proper leadership always bear fruit.

The Deputy Spokesperson assured that the administration will keep strengthening structures around sports to give both established and upcoming athletes a fair chance to shine on global stages.

Muthuma’s remarks come at a time when the government has been keen to showcase sports not only as a unifying factor but also as a growing industry that can create jobs and generate economic opportunities for Kenyans.
