Kenya Railways has officially completed the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service, marking a major step toward improving urban transport in the coastal city.
The ambitious project included the construction of modern passenger stations in Mombasa town and Miritini, rehabilitation of 16.6 kilometers of the existing Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) line, and a 2.3-kilometre railway bridge over the ocean at Makupa.
Transport Principal Secretary Mohamed Daghar, speaking during an inspection of the newly completed infrastructure, confirmed that operations will begin soon. He noted that Kenya Railways had carried out successful test rides to ensure both safety and operational readiness.
“I am pleased to inform you that the project is now complete and ready for operations. Our goal is to reduce commuting time, ease road congestion, cut carbon emissions, and provide safe, reliable, and affordable transport for all,” said PS Daghar.
Two additional stations are planned in Changamwe West and Changamwe East, expanding access and coverage for local residents.
The commuter service is designed to complement the Madaraka Express Passenger Service, offering last-mile connectivity for passengers traveling into Mombasa town.
The Mombasa Commuter Rail Service includes “Park and Ride” and “Drop and Ride” options, with parking capacity for more than 100 vehicles. Kenya Railways aims to serve over 1,000 commuters daily, helping reduce pressure on busy urban roads.
Kenya Railways Board Chairman Abdi Bare highlighted that the Link train schedule has been synchronized with the Madaraka Express timetable to ensure seamless transfers.
“Every time the Madaraka Express arrives, the Link train will be on standby to provide last-mile transport into Mombasa town,” said Bare.
“Likewise, the Link train will transport passengers from Mombasa to the Miritini station to board the Express.”
This development represents a significant milestone in integrating rail services in Mombasa. It demonstrates Kenya Railways’ commitment to closing logistical gaps, enhancing passenger convenience, and improving urban mobility while reducing congestion and carbon emissions.
With the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service now ready, coastal residents and visitors can look forward to faster, safer, and more reliable travel options across the city and beyond.
