His death on September 2, 2025, was confirmed by Governor Anne Waiguru, who praised Njiri as a leader committed to service, knowledge, and enterprise.

Kirinyaga County is in mourning following the passing of its first Deputy Governor, Julius Muthike Njiri, who served between 2013 and 2017 during Kenya’s inaugural devolved government term alongside Governor Joseph Ndathi.

His death on September 2, 2025, was confirmed by Governor Anne Waiguru, who praised Njiri as a leader committed to service, knowledge, and enterprise.

Governor Waiguru expressed her condolences, stating: “Kirinyaga has lost one of its founding county leaders, Hon. Julius Muthike Njiri, who served as our first Deputy Governor. He stood for service, knowledge, and enterprise. My condolences to his family, colleagues and the people whose lives he touched.”

Njiri’s tenure in office was marked by both achievements and tensions. Elected on a TNA ticket in 2013 alongside Joseph Ndathi, he frequently clashed with the governor over his role and responsibilities.

In 2016, Njiri publicly complained about being sidelined, stating that he had gone months without official duties.

He further alleged that his fuel and transport allowances were withheld and that he lacked an official car, contrary to constitutional provisions. The disagreements culminated in Njiri declaring he would not work with Ndathi again due to mistreatment.

After leaving office in 2017, Njiri focused on furthering his education. He earned a PhD in Business Administration from Miramar California University in 2022, a Global MBA in 2018, and a Global Executive MBA in 2011 from the United States International University.

He also held a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Nairobi, obtained in 2008.

The family has not yet disclosed the cause of Njiri’s death or the details of his burial arrangements.
