UoN cautions first years against fake admission letters

UoN dismissed the post as fake, urging students to be cautious and seek information only through the university’s official communication channels.
The University of Nairobi has raised concern over the circulation of fake admission letters on social media, warning first-year students to avoid relying on unverified platforms for their admission details.
In a statement released on Monday, July 21, the university disowned a post shared by an unverified account claiming that all first-year students, both government-sponsored and self-sponsored, could download their admission letters from the university’s student portal using their KCSE index numbers.
UoN dismissed the post as fake, urging students to be cautious and seek information only through the university’s official communication channels.
These include its verified Facebook page, the official X (Twitter) account, and direct SMS notifications.
“To ensure a smooth onboarding process, please follow the instructions below carefully, depending on your admission category,” the university said.
The university clarified that students under the government-sponsored category (Module 1) must obtain their admission information from the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) website.
Meanwhile, those under the self-sponsored category (Module 2) who have not received an SMS from the institution should reach out through UoN’s official email or telephone contact.
"Congratulations once again on your admission to the University of Nairobi! To ensure a smooth onboarding process, please follow the instructions below carefully, depending on your admission category," UoN stated.
It added, "Pro Tip: To avoid missing important updates, ensure push notifications on your mobile phone are enabled. The University will continue to send important updates via SMS until the admission process is complete."
The institution further encouraged all students to remain alert, saying SMS would be used as the main channel of communication for updates throughout the admission period.
This alert comes shortly after KUCCPS announced the opening of its inter-institutional transfer portal.
In a notice issued on Saturday, July 12, KUCCPS said that students who wished to switch courses or institutions could do so between Monday, July 14, and Thursday, July 24.
However, the placement agency emphasized that only applicants who meet the respective cut-off points would be allowed to make those changes.
