A requiem mass for Mildred Wanyama, the mother of Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President McDonald Mariga and former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama, is currently underway at Mariakani Christian Centre in South B, Nairobi.

The service, which commenced on Wednesday, July 2, is being led by the Church of God East Africa and is expected to conclude by 5:00 p.m.

Mildred passed away on the morning of Saturday, June 14.

FKF President Hussein Mohammed, who visited the Wanyama family on June 30, conveyed his condolences and pledged the federation’s support during this difficult period.

“Together with several FKF officials and chairpersons, we visited the Wanyama family to offer our support as they prepare to lay Mama Mildred to rest. We stand with them and pray for comfort and strength,” Hussein said.

Mildred Wanyama leaves behind a rich sporting legacy, having been a netball player in the 1970s and later rising to serve as president of the Kenya Netball Federation between 2014 and 2018.

She was married to legendary AFC Leopards midfielder Noah Wanyama, and together they raised a family synonymous with sporting excellence.

Her sons — Mariga, Victor, Thomas, and Sylvester — have all donned the national football jersey at various levels, while her daughter, Mercy Wanyama, is a celebrated basketballer currently playing professionally in Spain.

Mildred was a constant presence at her children’s games, often seen passionately supporting them from the stands.

Her contribution to women’s sports, particularly in netball administration, remains a significant part of her legacy.
