Harambee Stars: Notable names react to Gabon loss

Harambee Stars lost 1-2 to Gabon in a 2026 World Cup qualifier at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi on Sunday afternoon.

A well attended clash that saw many fans miss out on space due to oversubscription, the entertaining match saw Gabon boost their world cup hopes with a win thanks to striker Pierre Emerick Aubameyang who scored twice to help his side over the finish line.

Michael Olunga the Stars captain scored the home side's goal. Below are some quotes from notable persons who attended the clash yesterday.

"Harambee Stars put up a spirited fight against Gabon in today's thrilling match. We will keep supporting our boys to ensure that they are better prepared and motivated to deliver results in the coming fixtures," President William Ruto said on his X Account.

Former Kenyan prime minister Raila Odinga, an avid supporter of football in the country also attended the match.

" We spent this afternoon watching an entertaining football match between Kenya’s Harambee Stars and the Panthers of Gabon at the Nyayo National Stadium. Congratulations to the visitors on their win. I am encouraged by the enthusiasm of our local fans, and it gives me hope for the future of football in Kenya," he stated also on X.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya also took time to praise the boys for a gallant display despite the loss and thanked fans for showing up.

"To our Harambee Stars, we stand with you despite today’s result. Every game is a lesson, and we believe in your resilience and determination. Keep your heads high, work harder, and come back stronger. Kenya is behind you! Thank you Kenyans kwa kuonyesha uzalendo kwa kufika kwa wingi kuishabikia Harambee Stars (Thank you Kenyans for a show of patriotism by cheering for Harambee Stars)," he posted.

Football Kenya Federation chairman Hussein Mohammed left the stadium a determined man following the clash.

"A gallant fight from Harambee Stars, but we live to fight another day. Huge thanks to all Kenyans for the incredible support - the 12th man was truly behind the boys today, and it felt special after years of playing away from home," he also posted on X.

His assistant and former Harambee Stars midfielder McDonald Mariga was also a happy man despite the loss.

"Incredible fighting spirit but unlucky against Gabon, the resilience and determination shown today will be a good foundation for our team going forward," he remarked.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga was grateful for a supportive home crowd.

" Thank you KENYANS for turning out in large numbers to support Harambee Stars. Despite the results (2-1), the team fought hard with resilience. I want to extend all my gratitude to everyone who made it a success. Asanteni sana 12th man. One Love KENYA," he shared.

Kenya's next World Cup qualifier will take place on September 1 when they take on the Gambia at home.

Before that, Kenya is expected to host the African Nations Championships CHAN in August.
