In Summary

According to the weekly forecast released on Monday, June 2, rain is expected between Tuesday and Saturday in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central Rift Valley, and the Coast.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has predicted continued rainfall in most parts of the country over the next five days, with Nairobi, Kiambu, and Mombasa among the counties expected to experience showers and changing weather patterns.

According to the weekly forecast released on Monday, June 2, rain is expected between Tuesday and Saturday in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central Rift Valley, and the Coast.

The department has advised residents to prepare for weather variations including cloudy mornings, sunny intervals, afternoon showers, and isolated thunderstorms.

In counties such as Nairobi, Nyandarua, Murang’a, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Laikipia, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka, cloudy mornings followed by sunshine will dominate the week.

However, light rain is possible on Tuesday in some places. Afternoon and night showers are expected through the week, with Saturday night predicted to be dry.

The temperatures in these counties will range from a minimum of 5°C to a maximum of 27°C.

The southeastern counties of Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, along with the inland areas of Tana River, will see mostly sunny afternoons on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday.

However, light showers may be experienced on Thursday and Friday afternoons. Nights are likely to remain partly cloudy throughout the week.

These areas are forecast to have temperatures ranging from 10°C to 31°C.

Residents in coastal counties—Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and the coastal areas of Tana River—should prepare for showers during most mornings, afternoons, and nights. The only exceptions will be sunny spells on Saturday morning and Tuesday afternoon, while Tuesday night will be partly cloudy.

Daytime temperatures in the coastal region will reach up to 32°C, with nighttime lows of 23°C.

In the Lake Victoria Basin and the Central Rift Valley, including Kisumu, Siaya, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Bomet, Kakamega, and others, morning sunshine is expected except on Tuesday when light rain may occur.

Afternoon thunderstorms and evening showers will be common throughout the week, especially on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday nights.

Maximum temperatures in these areas are forecast to hit 30°C, with minimums of 10°C.

Meanwhile, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo will remain mostly dry and sunny, both during the day and at night. These counties will continue experiencing high temperatures, with daytime highs reaching 38°C and nighttime lows around 16°C.

Turkana and Samburu will have similar weather conditions, with dry, sunny days and partly cloudy nights. These counties are expected to record the week’s highest temperatures, peaking at 39°C.

The forecast follows recent episodes of flooding in Nairobi, including along Waiyaki Way, and comes as Kenyans continue to monitor weather changes after months of heavy rainfall. The Meteorological Department’s advisory serves as a caution to residents to remain alert to daily updates and be mindful of weather-related risks.
