The executions, carried out despite international outcry, have drawn sharp condemnation from Amnesty International, which has labelled the trial process “grossly unfair.”

Iranian authorities have executed two members of the outlawed Mujahideen-e-Khalq (MEK) group for allegedly orchestrating attacks on civilian infrastructure using improvised projectiles, according to the judiciary-run outlet Mizan.

The executions, carried out despite international outcry, have drawn sharp condemnation from Amnesty International, which has labelled the trial process “grossly unfair.”

The two men, Mehdi Hassani and Behrouz Ehsani-Eslamloo, were convicted in September 2024 and sentenced to death on charges including moharebeh “waging war against God” alongside destruction of public property and membership in a terrorist organization.

The Iranian Supreme Court upheld the verdict and dismissed a request for a retrial, Mizan reported.

According to authorities, the pair, described as “operational elements” of the MEK, constructed hand-held mortars and launchers in coordination with MEK leadership and launched projectiles targeting residential areas, public offices, schools, and charitable institutions. No casualties were reported in the attacks.

Maryam Rajavi, leader of the Paris-based National Council of Resistance of Iran the political arm of the MEK praised the two men, calling them “steadfast Mojahedin” who endured three years of torture, pressure, and threats with “pride and dignity.”

However, rights organizations have disputed the legitimacy of the trial. Amnesty International said the men were arrested in 2022 and subjected to torture, forced confessions, and prolonged solitary confinement.

The group cited informed sources who claim the two were interrogated without legal counsel and physically abused in custody.

The executions come amid a broader surge in capital punishment in Iran. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights reported at least 901 executions in the country in 2024 the highest figure since 2015.

The MEK, which was originally a leftist-Islamist group that opposed the Shah in the 1970s and targeted U.S. interests, later fell out with other factions of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.

It has since campaigned against the Islamic Republic from exile and was removed from U.S. and EU terrorist lists in 2012.
