KRA extends tax filing deadline by 24 hours

The authority clarified that returns must be filed even if an employer already deducts and remits Pay As You Earn (PAYE) on behalf of an employee.
The Kenya Revenue Authority has extended the deadline for filing annual tax returns by 24 hours, giving taxpayers until midnight on July 1, 2025, to meet their legal obligation.
In a statement issued on Sunday, KRA said: "Tumefungua service lane! 24-hour extension up to tomorrow, 1st July 2025, midnight to file and pay your returns!" The tax return deadline had initially been set for June 30.
To accommodate the expected rush of last-minute filers, the authority also announced extended working hours at its offices on Monday.
"We have extended our working hours tomorrow to serve you better," the statement read.
KRA reminded the public that filing tax returns is a legal requirement for all eligible taxpayers—not just salaried workers. This includes business owners, landlords, farmers, and even those with no income, who are expected to submit a NIL return.
The authority clarified that returns must be filed even if an employer already deducts and remits Pay As You Earn (PAYE) on behalf of an employee.
Those who are self-employed, earn rental income, or engage in farming are required by law to declare all sources of income. Failure to file on time attracts a penalty of five per cent of the tax due or Ksh2,000, whichever is higher.
