Kenya ranked top in Africa for ICT regulation in latest UN global report

Kenya has been named Africa’s leading nation in ICT regulation, securing the top position on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) ICT Regulatory Tracker with an impressive score of 93 points.

The ITU, a United Nations agency specializing in information and communication technology, released its 2024 rankings showing Kenya outperforming regional giants Nigeria and South Africa, who scored 92 and 88 points, respectively.

Globally, Kenya ranked 20th out of 194 countries a major milestone that highlights the nation’s growing influence in the digital regulatory space.

Italy led the global list with 100 points, followed closely by Lithuania at 99.5, while Finland and Ireland shared third place with 99 points each.

Broadcasting and Telecommunications Principal Secretary Stephen Isaboke hailed the achievement, crediting the Communications Authority (CA) for its pivotal role in advancing digital inclusion and governance.

He described the ranking as a reflection of the CA’s consistent efforts over the past 25 years to build a regulatory body that commands international respect.

Kenya’s ICT regulatory framework has officially reached “Generation 4 (G4)” status the highest level on the ITU scale, signifying a progressive, inclusive, and competition-driven approach.

This distinction strengthens Kenya’s position as a leading innovation hub on the continent and a global model for regulatory excellence.

Communications Authority Director General David Mugonyi welcomed the recognition as timely, coming just ahead of the authority’s 25th anniversary celebrations.

“This milestone not only celebrates the strides we’ve made over the years but also motivates us to continue building a digitally inclusive and well-connected Kenya,”

said Mugonyi, emphasizing the Authority’s commitment to expanding service access and promoting consumer choice.

Kenya’s leadership in the rankings places it among Africa’s most advanced ICT regulators.

Other countries featured in the continental top ten include Malawi, Egypt, Rwanda, Morocco, Uganda, Burkina Faso, and Senegal highlighting a broader trend of regulatory progress across Africa.
