Police in Nairobi's Langata Sub-county have arrested a man in connection with a fraudulent gold scam involving a Pakistani national.

According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Stephen Magero was apprehended during a joint operation comprising DCI and KPS officers.

Police say Magero was arrested at Ngong View Estate in Langata.

"The fake gold dealer was arrested at Sultan Suites, Ngong View Estate, following investigations into a complaint filed by the foreign national who reported being defrauded of USD 34,800 ," said the statement.

Investigations have revealed that the suspect presented the complainant with 500 grams of counterfeit gold and received the payment in cash.

Subsequent testing of the gold revealed it to be fake, prompting the complainant to report the matter at Karen Police Station.

A search conducted at the suspect’s office resulted in the recovery of ten (10) bars of suspected fake gold, business cards bearing the name John Mbalaka, a MacBook Pro laptop, smelting machines and related apparatus, a mining certificate under the name Chawanda Minerals, a weighing machine, two plastic boxes containing sand and several assorted files and documents.

The suspect is currently in custody pending arraignment.

Meanwhile, at least eight suspects have been arrested in connection with a spate of robberies that have rocked Kiserian, Kajiado County, in recent weeks.

Police said the suspects were nabbed on September 5 in coordinated operations in Mwea-Kagio, Kirinyaga County, and Rimpa in Kiserian.

Their arrests followed a series of violent incidents reported on August 9, August 22, August 23, and September 1.

The eight suspects are set to appear in court on September 8.
