The Kenya Revenue Authority has revealed that Kenyans can now file their Nil returns through the eCitizen platform, marking a significant shift from the previously exclusive iTax system.

The move is part of efforts to simplify tax filing, especially as the June 30 deadline nears.

This change is aimed at reducing the challenges that many taxpayers face when using iTax and is part of a wider plan to offer simpler, more accessible ways for Kenyans to meet their tax obligations.

“You can now file NIL returns on eCitizen; filing taxes has never been this easy. Use this and escape the commotion,” the statement read in part.

KRA has clarified that for now, only Nil returns, which apply to individuals with no taxable income — can be submitted through the eCitizen platform.

The tax authority explained that this is one of the measures being taken to address frequent downtimes and technical issues users experience on iTax, particularly during the final days of filing.

Previously, all tax filings — including Nil returns — were processed only on iTax. But now, KRA has integrated tax services into eCitizen, a platform already used widely for other government services, to make tax filing more user-friendly.

The process to file Nil returns on eCitizen is straightforward:

  • Users must visit the eCitizen portal, log in with their usual credentials, and go to eCitizen KRA.

  • From there, they should select KRA services, go to the tax filing section, and choose Nil returns if they had no taxable income.

  • After confirming their KRA PIN and personal details are correct, they can click submit.

  • A confirmation message will appear once filing is successful.

KRA has assured users that the system is secure and that tax records will be updated automatically after submission.

The shift is part of KRA's wider plan to modernise tax collection and improve compliance rates. Many Kenyans, the authority noted, fail to file their returns because the iTax system is too complicated, and eCitizen is expected to help simplify the process.

It is also part of the government’s efforts to centralise digital services under one umbrella platform. eCitizen is being positioned as the main entry point for accessing various — if not all — government services.

With the June 30 deadline approaching, KRA has urged Kenyans to make use of the easier filing process to avoid penalties. Those eligible for Nil returns are encouraged to act early and file through the updated system.
