Car ownership transfers now done digitally on eCitizen

In the new system, sellers initiate the process by logging into their eCitizen accounts, selecting the vehicle, uploading the logbook and entering the buyer’s details.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has fully moved the transfer of motor vehicle ownership to a digital system, allowing Kenyans to complete the process through the NTSA service portal on eCitizen without physically visiting NTSA offices.
In the new system, sellers initiate the process by logging into their eCitizen accounts, selecting the vehicle, uploading the logbook and entering the buyer’s details.
The buyer is then notified digitally and can either accept or decline the transfer.
Once the transaction is approved, logbooks are processed within three working days, after which the buyer collects the document at their preferred NTSA centre by presenting the old logbook and original identification.
According to NTSA, the simplified online process has reduced verification and approval steps, with applications now taking only a few minutes to complete.
Each application generates a unique Application ID to allow real-time tracking, while digital audit trails have been embedded to boost security and curb fraud.
The Authority clarified that rejected applications are flagged instantly through SMS, with reasons given, and can be corrected and resubmitted at no extra charge.
It also urged motorists not to engage in bribery or use unofficial intermediaries, warning that all services must only be conducted through the digital platform.
NTSA further reminded the public that failing to complete ownership transfer within 14 days, as required by the Traffic Act, amounts to an offence. It advised vehicle buyers to always verify ownership records through the NTSA service portal before completing transactions to avoid disputes and losses.
"If contacted by any person(s) or through an unofficial channel, advising that a transfer of ownership application can be fast-tracked or influenced in any way, please report the matter to the nearest NTSA office or the EACC for further action," NTSA stated.
The Authority emphasised that the full digitisation of the process is intended to save time for motorists, enhance transparency, reduce fraud risks and ensure compliance with the law.
