HELB outlines ID update steps for applicants registered as minors

HELB warned that creating a new account could interfere with ongoing applications and may result in errors or delays.
Students who applied for HELB loans or scholarships while underage have been advised to update their portal accounts with their national ID details once they receive the document, without creating new accounts.
In a notice issued on Friday, July 11, the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) explained that applicants who used their KCSE index number to register as minors should continue using the same account by simply updating their details.
"Do not create a new account. Simply update the one you opened using your index number with your national ID details," the notice reads.
HELB clarified that these updates are necessary for students who registered on the portal using their KCSE index numbers before turning 18 and now hold valid national ID cards.
To make the changes, students should log in to the same HELB account they created using their KCSE index number. Once logged in, a prompt will appear asking them to update their information. They should then enter their National ID number and first name exactly as they appear on the ID to avoid any validation issues.
After keying in the correct information, students must click the 'Validate' button. A confirmation message will follow, showing that the ID has been successfully updated. They should then click the 'Register' tab to complete the update process.
HELB warned that creating a new account could interfere with ongoing applications and may result in errors or delays.
The board also addressed concerns raised by applicants facing errors during the September intake application process.
In a separate message issued on July 7, HELB urged affected students, including 2024 KCSE candidates preparing to join colleges and universities, to reach out through official support channels.
"Seeing an error on the HELB App that your National ID is already activated on another device? Don’t worry! Just send us a direct message with your registered phone number and National ID, and we’ll assist you in getting it resolved quickly," HELB stated.
The board emphasised the importance of following the outlined steps to avoid disruptions in the loan or scholarship application process.
