Comedian Russell Brand appears in court over rape and sexual assault

In public statements, Brand has repeatedly denied the allegations, maintaining that all his past sexual encounters have been consensual.
British comedian and actor Russell Brand appeared in a London courtroom today, May 2, 2025, facing multiple charges of rape and sexual assault.
The 49-year-old, known for his provocative comedy and past film roles, was charged with one count of rape, one count of oral rape, one count of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault, all relating to incidents alleged to have taken place between 1999 and 2005.
The charges involve four separate women, with reported incidents occurring in locations including Bournemouth and central London.
The case was brought forward following a joint media investigation in 2023 by The Times, The Sunday Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches, which prompted further reports to the Metropolitan Police.
During the 12-minute hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, Brand confirmed his identity but did not enter a plea.
He was granted conditional bail and is expected to appear next at the Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey) on May 30.
Conditions of his bail include informing authorities of his whereabouts and attending all court hearings.
In public statements, Brand has repeatedly denied the allegations, maintaining that all his past sexual encounters have been consensual.
Following the hearing, he posted a video reaffirming his intention to "prove [his] innocence" and expressing confidence in the legal process.
Brand, who has largely withdrawn from mainstream entertainment in recent years, now runs a digital platform promoting wellness, spirituality, and social commentary. He currently resides in Florida, USA.
The case continues to attract widespread media attention and has reignited discussions about accountability in the entertainment industry. Brand’s legal team has not yet issued a detailed public response to the charges.
